on music
My dad and I thought about starting a podcast together. We would talk about secular music through the lens of Christian faith. We even recorded a couple episodes, but then we lost track of it, I moved away, and for good measure I set my Christian faith a little out of arm’s reach for sanity’s sake. But I still love this idea, of drawing the more out of music. Most people know that music can carry depth: that’s why we’re so passionate about it. Music helps us feel and express emotions, fear and love, in a way we can’t do any other way.
When I started thinking about the Church of the Laundromat, it was apparent to me that it would need music. I’m carrying this idea loosely as I go forward to write more stories, but for now - here’s tonight’s Church of the Laundromat setlist. I hope you check out the songs and listen to the words and find a little meaning tonight.
Do you see the sunlight?
Look up
There's flowers in your hair
Hold on
'Cause somebody loves you
You know trouble's always gonna be there
Don't let it bring you to your knees
Look up
Our call to worship today is a reminder that even when life is feeling broken and bad - we are surrounded by hope. We usually have to do a little looking for it, though.
And if you get carried away
Let the music play you through the pain
And wear that silver lining
Wear it close to your skin
But if it's the drugs, the women, the wine, the weed
The love that took everything I own
Just take it all

God, life is weird, isn’t it? To me, “Silver Lining” is about offering up the love we can and living the life we can. Let’s go.
Are you worthy of being saved?
All your fears and insecurities
Just set me free
While redemption seems far away
While I stumble through every day

I’m not sure why I picked this one as a benediction, so I’ll offer my own instead: May you find what you need and receive what you are given.
